What people are saying about Herculaneum

An easy alternative to Pompeii. Get the picture without the crowds.

Chose Herculaneum on advise as my partner has mobility and breathing difficulties. Bought Fast track tickets to avoid queues at entrance.... but not required when we got there about noon. Easy to reach from Sorrento by public train €5.80 return followed by a short downhill walk to the site. Entrance through pleasant visitors centre with toilets. Gentle downhill path provides good views and photo opps. The actual excavations are fairly compact and hired audio guides seemed very popular (€8 each/€13 for 2). Clearly not an easy walk for anyone with more than very minor mobility issues but it's not a seafront promenade. Whilst not the scale or variety of its big brother, Pompeii, no crowds. Refreshments are available by auto vending machines along with more toilets close to excavations. Overall well worth the visit to get the experience... nice views across to Vesuvius... which makes you think... what if?? We got a taxi back up the hill to station €10, overpriced... yes, but essential...

Great trip, the combination of ruins and volcano made a fantastic duo

Loved both the ruins and the volcano, could have done with a bit longer in herculanium, but fantastic. The walk, and or climb, to the top of the volcano could floor some people, as some older people were attempting to do it, this might need to be made a bit clearer as it would catch people out and did I think for some, the walk being long and quite steep too. Well worth it when you get to the top though, and the views are to die for... A bit worrying when you think about it afterwards that this volcano is very active and could blow again at any time, that wouldn't stop me going up though... The history behind this sleeping giant is too rich to want to miss out on. The only downside was the lack of toilets on the whole site of the volcano, this could be catered for better, with the amount of people going, and the exercise they do to get to the top, does fill your bladder somewhat, and with no where to go, makes the trip back to Naples a bit uncomfortable. A toilet block please.

Great 'must see' locations, more time would have been nice ...

Herculaneum is well worth a visit, the site is much smaller than Pompeii and although the allocated time is 2 hours, to do it justice 3 hours would be better. We didn't get 2 hours, because the bus was late and the skip the line queue was long! Suggest you hire an audio guide or buy a guidebook. There were no free 'English' leaflets on the day we visited which was a bit disappointing. Vesuvius is also well worth a visit, you need to be fit and able to walk uphill for about 30 minutes on loose volcanic stone, and you need good sturdy walking shoes. It provides for a good workout though, I certainly ached after the climb! Note this is not an organised tour. This tour uses the services of a local hop on bus service. The bus transfer from Herculaneum to Vesuvius was packed and people had to stand. The bus was changed enroute, at the wine tasting stop, this was supposed to have been a 30 minute stop, but they only stopped for 15 minutes. No time to buy lunch.

Exchange the voucher at Herculaneum ticket office

The only challenge I had was that the email I received Had an address to exchange the ticket and referred to “the site”. I was not sure if it was the site of a tour agency or the historical site itself. Other than that the process to get the ticket and audio guide went very smoothly and quickly. There was only a little regular line but, as I was very tight for time every moment saved was worth the extra cost. I can imagine in high season it would be very advantageous. The site itself is very well preserved and much more manageable than Pompeii (which is also spectacular but really requires 2 days to see it all. Take a hat and water as it gets warm with little shade. The audio guide was great with descriptions of the buildings and a wealth of other historical info.

Great place but still had to join the ticket Q

Absolutely loved Herculaneum- a must do/see part of any trip to the area. Unfortunately we were told we still had to join the ticket Q to turn the mobile app ticket into a paper one! Luckily the Q was not too long- Go when it opens at 8.30 & it’s less hot & very few people about.
