Full description
Idyllic courtyards, old factories, the remnants of the once magnificent pleasure palaces are all found off the busy party mile, which on warm summer days attracts thousands of locals. Life, work and fun - everything lies close together in the Hamburg neighborhood of Schanzenviertel. Here, luxury fountain pens, high-quality pianos and carriages for the Russian tsars were once manufactured.

Today, the old livestock hall hosts celebrity chefs, and movies are produced in an old piano factory. Names like Mont Blanc or Steinway are as much part of the Schanzenviertel as the movie director Fatih Akin or celebrity chef Tim Mälzer. Willi Bredel's novel "Rosenhofstraße" is set in the residential area between Schanzenstraße and Schulterblatt, and the "Lord of Barmbek" landed his big coup at the post office on Susannenstraße.

In Schanzenviertel, one fun place joins the next, even though the times of the really big amusement palaces are long gone. The Rote Flora, which used to be a well-known theater, is now the starting point for many rallies. Then, there is the Schiller Opera and several other theatre and vaudeville buildings from the 19th century. This tour will not only explore the history of this famous district, it will also highlight current developments and trends. While 20 years ago life in the neighborhood was still characterized by cheap rent, organic shops and Turkish vegetable shops, the apartments here have become almost unaffordable. Today, trendy shops and fine dining establishments dominate the area.
