Great experience, shame about the large group

Hostess was fab and very much got into her role, shared some interesting information which was great for the beginning of our trip as it really set the scene for the history of Edinburgh. However, we went on a Monday evening and was extremely surprised by the large group who accompanied us, there was 40+ people which on a tour with one speaker caused some issues...if you weren’t at the front you couldn’t hear a thing when in the grave yard, such a shame as we missed a lot of info/stories. Not sure if the day tours are less busy? The vaults were great, went into 2 separate vaults and was really able to grasp the history. Would recommend watching some stuff online just to prepare as we weren’t aware there was poltergeist activity in one of them...my partner wasn’t very comfortable but both felt surprisingly calm. Aside from the large group, definitely would recommend as a must see and experience if visiting!

A thrilling and in depth tour around Edinburgh

Our tour guide was Dr. Knox, who lead us through central Edinburgh, stopping at points on the way to tell us about Edinburgh’s dark and sinister past. The tour guide was incredibly involving and humorous, but was also creepy and mysterious at the same time. Would definetly recommend to anyone wanting to learn about Edinburgh’s past, as well as anyone wanting to see Edinburgh’s underground vaults too, a dark and chilling location underneath the main streets of Edinburgh. The tour guide made the element of ghost hunting incredibly interesting, as well as keeping everyone in the group involved within the tour. 10/10.

Spooky, entertaining, informative, witty.

We had a superb tour last night with James who was kitted out with full make up and costume and fake arms hanging under his coat. He managed to engage every single one of us with his witty banter despite having a large number of non English speakers in the group. He was incredibly entertaining and informative and had us all in stitches, and even jumping out of our skin on a few occasions with his spooky tales. We’ve been laughing all day about some of his comments. The vaults and the cemetery were incredibly chilling and my 11 year old daughter loved it. The right balance between humour and grisly tales.

Not as scary as expected, but a great way to see the city at night!

Dr Joseph Bell was a very clear and articulate guide. We didn't get as many scary stories as expected, but did get some good bits of history and context. We also missed a couple of specific locations in the graveyard because there was another tour there, which I think should be better coordinated in future as I believe one of them had been investigated by paranormal investigators who actually came up with stuff. We only know this because another person on the tour had been there before and told us about it.

Very interesting piece of history, but not scary.

Look, I did not expect McKenzie to come and dance for us like a little trained monkey...but having said that. This was not the least unsettling at all, and Greyfriars Kirkyard is really a quiet and cozy place on a late summer evening. As a historical tour however, this was easily worth 5 stars, in particular because of the guide, Charlie from Orkney, who is a gifted storyteller indeed. This has really sparked my interest for similar experiences. Maybe even in my own home town.
