Full description
Tour the Santa Clara Convent. See the chapels, the cloister, the lower choir and the church of what was the first female convent on the island, as well as the richest and most famous, throughout centuries of history. On your way to the City Hall, enjoy the bourgeois 19th century, walking on the streets where royalty walked, namely Empress Sissi of Austria. Entering the City Hall, see the different noble-like rooms and experience a unique view over the city, in the tower of the City Hall. Follow it up with the Jesuits’ College, which housed the famous and polemic religious order which Pope Francis is a part of. The College was built on the orders of king Sebastian of Portugal in 1569 and became the first major learning institution in Madeira.

The Jesuits’ Church or Church of Saint John the Evangelist is a national monument celebrating two different styles of art, the Baroque and the Mannerism. This temple has 11 chapels made of gilded wood in Madeira, and also has a nave decorated with Portuguese tiles and frescos.

This building complex is also being used by the University of Madeira, the youngest Portuguese university.  At the end of the tour the guide will leave you in Museu Café for lunch, a restaurant in the 17th century arcade of the former Bishop's Palace, currently the Sacred Art Museum of Funchal.
