What people are saying about Favela Santa Marta
Rio is an amazing and beautiful place but this tour opened my eyes on a completely different side of the city. Our tour guide was very passionate about explaining the history of Favelas and made sure that the tour is not like any other sightseeing tour (so please follow the tour guide's instructions and do not take pictures at the places that you are not supposed to). Aside from beaches and bars, I learned so much about how the city of Rio grew and what it looks like at the moment with more than 100 favelas. You can also support the community when you stop by at local shops where the people of favela made souvenirs and drawings with their own talents. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in social issues and mingling with the locals. One thing, NOT recommended for people who cannot climb up lots of stairs, you do need to climb up to get to the top of the favela.
Our tour guide was amazing, passionate and highly informative about everything and anything we asked about the community we were experiencing in Santa marta. Unfortunately I can't recall his name to give him full credit..but I'm glad this tour was the exactly what I anticipated in terms of it being an insightful tour and not disrespectful to the community we were trying to learn about. There's plenty of opportunity during the trip to get a snack, light refreshment and or relieve yourself if need. The spots along the tour appropriate for taking photos are very good too. I felt very comfortable in the hands of our tour guide and left the tour feeling enriched with understanding of the position of the communities who exist in these mountain side homes.
I absolutely loved this tour because it gave us a chance to gain an understanding of how the people in the community live. We got to see a bit of their culture, and make a few friends along the way. As well as knock out some stereotypes that we were told before we went. The fact that we were shown around by someone who not only lives and grew up there, but deeply cares about the community, made it all the more worth it. I was very impressed and we were happy we got a chance to go. Would definitely recommend and do again!
We were guided by Philip who has a contagious passion about the socio/political premises of why a favela is considered normal in Rio. You can agree or disagree but this puts everything you see after in perspective and gives a meaningful why to your presence there. The children school is pure poetry and after a while you forget the geography and just let the feelings flow. Definitely mind opening and happy we chose this agency.
One of the best tours I have ever been on! The guide was very knowledgeable, engaging and friendly. We met him while lost in the favela and he was so helpful and friendly we decided to book the tour a few days later! I can’t recommend this tour enough!! Knowing my money goes toward helping the community, being able to buy local art work/crafts and meeting local people made it a very special experience! Thank you!
