Planning Your Visit

What is Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

With Dubai's rapid expansion, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was founded to protect the natural landscape and endemic wildlife from overspill. It is located in the southeastern corner of the Emirate of Dubai and covers 87 squared miles of land. Some safaris are allowed to take you out to these pristine dunes.

How hot does it get?

Dubai summer temperatures average at 106ºF (41ºC), and often get a lot higher than that. Temperatures are more comfortable between December and March, but you might have to contend with irregular spurts of rain.

Can you camp?

In some places it's possible to camp, but unless you're extremely experienced, we wouldn't recommend it without being accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Fortunately, there are several overnight camping safaris available.

What is a desert safari?

What can you really expect on a safari tour? More than you may realize! This is your chance to drive over dunes and participate in a variety of traditional desert activities: camel riding, sandboarding, trying shisha, authentic cuisine, henna tattoos, and local entertainment.

What people are saying about Dubai

Superb & very efficiently organised day, with excellent guide

From start to finish this was a superb experience. Loads packed into just a few hours but nothing felt rushed. Our guide, Kassim, was absolutely superb: really friendly and knowledgeable, and very funny. The optional quad biking wasn’t cheap but such good fun, and well worth the money. Sand dune driving was excellent - and we felt very safe in Kassim’s hands, even when a tyre popped off the rim part way down a dune, which added to the excitement! Sand boarding was excellent - nothing beats a mouthful of sand when you realise you’re not as good on a surfboard as you imagined!! The Bedouin camp, whilst ‘touristified’ was still a great experience - good food, a range of activities, very sociable, and with great entertainment throughout the evening. And some great conversation with Kassim on the journeys to and from the hotel/desert which gave us a great insight into Dubai. All in all a fabulous experience due to great organisation, but ultimately to our superb guide Kassim. Thank you.

Absolute must have when on holidays in Dubai

Bought by internet, when we were at home yet, 6000km away. Next day got email with question where do I stay to set pick up location. I day before received what's up message with details of pick up time and contact from our guide. Guide picked us up from arranged location. Amazing! As to the trip, 3 stages: 1) desert Safari 2) quad ride (optional) 3) sand boarding 4) camel ride Desert Safari great if you like extreme ride. Advice: do not eat too much breakfast or take medicine if you suffer car sick. It is really extremely and great! As to quad ride stop, it was optional for us, extra paid. Just wait 20 min and the ride is continued. As to sand boarding - for us it was too short. I thought we will do it at the end of the trip, so we skied only twice. Two advices: ask the guide to repeat as many times as you wish. 2nd advice:buy sand masks or scarf, because in the desert there is a heavy wind with sand. So you cannot breath without! And get As tall shoes as you can.

Great experience with one minor negative

Great experience for a good price. Our guide, Mohamed Urus, was a prompt, courteous and informative guide both during the journey out and back and the safari itself. The brief camel ride and particularly extended desert bashing session were very enjoyable, and really showed off the dunes and landscape. Sole negative point was overeagerness to sell “extras” once at the safari startpoint on the edge of the desert. For example, providing headscarves for the camel ride, and only whilst putting them on you (without being asked, leading you to think they were part of the price) informing you how much they were, and reacting a little tersely when you declined to purchase it, or indeed any other items from their small shop or extras available such as quad biking.

June 2019. Great experience. Worth doing

Definitely worth doing. Our driver was Ali Bana. Very friendly chap and a great dune driver. He even stopped off on the way back to allow us to take photos of the Dubai skyline. Would recommend going. We had a great time. Not for the faint hearted. They do throw them around a bit but great fun.
