Full description
Take a tour of the ancient underground of Rome. Find out how the catacombs were used in ancient time as a burial area because it was forbidden to bury or cremate corpses in the city. The first spot you will visit is the Church of Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins and its famous crypt. Visit the main attraction, the crypt, decorated with around 4,000 Capuchin friars’ bones. The crypt is divided into five small chapels where you can see the mummies of some friars in their typical vests.

Depending on different closing days, visit Domitilla’s or Saint Sebastian’s or Priscilla’s Catacombs. One of the most important catacombs is Domitilla’s, which takes the name from Flavia Domitilla. Archaeological excavations discovered a cemetery originally composed of different burial chambers.

Hear about how the catacombs of Saint Sebastian were at first a pagan burial site, and then reused as a cemetery. Even though there are many poor burials, there is no lack of monumental burials, which you can see in the ala piazzola area. The Catacombs of Priscilla in Via Salaria are the most important in Rome. Some popes were buried in these catacombs as well as more than 40,000 people. Different cubicula, little rooms with frescos representing Old and New Testament scened are still visible.
