The 5 must-see catacombs in Rome

Whether it's a longing for a deeper sense of Rome's past, a chance to explore the underground tunnels of the city, or just morbid curiosity, exploring these subterranean burial sites is a must do, so here are our top five sites to see.

Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter

Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Peter are buried here, which is where the tomb receives its name. With a wonderful history and impressive art work, it's a perfect stop to make.

Catacombs of St. Callixtus

This is the most popular of all the catacombs, where you'll find the burial sites of many martyrs and 16 popes, not to mention early Christian frescoes.

Catacombs of St. Domitilla

The only catacombs still to contain bones, these are also some of the oldest, largest and most impressive. Included here, as well, is a 2nd century fresco of the last supper.

Catacombs of St. Sebastian

Featuring incredible architecture and with a fantastic history, it is well worth taking a tour to this catacomb.

Catacombs of Commodilla

The greatest draw to this catacomb is one of the earliest images of the bearded Christ. This tomb also originally held the relics of Saints Felix and Adauctus.

What people are saying about Catacombs of Rome

Amazing bone chapel puts life in perspective

Took this tour with my family including my 9 year old son. My son was fascinated and it gave the whole family some needed perspective. I would not recommend for younger children or for children easily frightened.

A great tour to end our time in Rome. Great fun! Thanks Miles.

We wanted to see the Appian Way, the aqueducts and the catacombs so this was a perfect tour and a great way to end our time in Rome. Mies was a wonderful guide - so friendly and informative. The farm stop was good and the wine helped me ride better. We enjoyed talking to Maria about her farm and cheese making. We would highly recommend this tour. While long in time it was not difficult with the electric bikes. If I can do it anyone can!!

Awe-inspiring insight into Rome's many layers

The crypts were the absolute highlight of this tour. Very humbling and thought-provoking. But, San Clemente and the catacombs followed close behind. Our guide Mikaela was excellent, knowledgeable and very passionate.
