Full description
You will begin this 8-hour tour with a visit to Britain's most preserved Roman town at Caerleon. Known as the "Fort of the Legion" the former military base was one of the first Roman conquests in Wales, made some 30 years after they had invaded England.

Explore the amphitheater where gladiators fought to their death, the barracks around which much of a Roman soldier's life revolved and the National Legionary Museum displaying archaeological relics of a way of life that existed almost 2,000 years ago.

Continue your Roman exploration at Caerwent, the former market town of Venta Silurum. Drive through the village to see evidence of invader occupation some 1,900 years ago. Some sections of the Roman town can be seen rising from the landscape up to 16.5 feet (5 meters) high.

Cross the majestic Usk and Wye Rivers to reach the spectacular monastery ruins of Tintern Abbey. Trailing in the footsteps of the Cistercian Monks, you will hear tales of dedication and treachery. The Abbey was abandoned in the 16th-Century before slowly falling into ruin.

Still remarkably intact from the outside, the ghostly Abbey skeleton has inspired poets and artists, including Wordsworth, Tennyson and Turner.

Lunch is taken at your leisure a few yards from the Abbey or at the nearby Abbey Mill Craft Center. Take a walk along the banks of the River Wye after lunch if you wish, or just relax in the lovely setting.

You will continue to Raglan Castle, described as the finest late-medieval fortress in Britain. A majestic Welsh castle, it boasts wonderful views of the Monmouthshire countryside.

You will end your journey here, before taking the coach back to Cardiff. This 8-hour excursion is by luxury 16-seater minibus, making for a more personalized experience in a small group.

Adrian, our driver and tourguide made the tour even more special!

The Wye Valley is beautiful and worth seeing on top of the magnificent Tintern Abbey. I was surprised by the Roman ruins, especially the amphiteater which was huge and well preserved. The itinerary as a whole was excellent and paced just right. I loved the smaller buses, and appreciated the musical accompaniment that was selected for us. By far the best part was our driver and tourguide, Adrian. He had the rare ability to animate history, giving us not just a sense of the bigger historical picture, but also the small details that are frequently left out. He is a wonderful person, full of Welsh charm, a delight to talk and listen to. He also took good care of us, drove carefully, patiently explained things to us, and kept us entertained for the entire day.

Was a lovely day travelling to the Wys Valley and visiting the Roman ruins, Abbey and Raglan castle, plus driving thru the valley. Our driver was very knowledgeable and helpful which made the day even more enjoyable, and we came away with a lot more info about the Welsh and their history, more than we would have if we did it on our own.

Historical Tour with Castles all over

Adrian the tour guide and driver of the coach was phenomenal and had entertained us throughout the journey. Enjoyed the country side of Wales but the tour consists of 2 back to back castles with one Roman touch. Could be better if time spend at castles can be reduced and more Welsh countryside is included.
