What people are saying about Berlin Philharmonic
I read mixed reviews of HoHo tours in Berlin but having done a 4 hour walking tour & a day at the zoo my teenagers were in no mood to have another day tramping around in temps of 28c. In the event this tour was a good choice. A live guide spoke excellent English & although we got off twice we were lucky enough to get our first, very good, woman guide again on the third bus. There is only one circular route in one direction which avoids any confusion & apart from a couple of 10 minute stops it goes round at a reasonable pace taking in all the major landmarks. One slight drawback was that the 2nd driver/guide didn't announce all the stops, or stop at every one so we missed getting off at the Tiergarten and had to have lunch in Potsdamer Platz instead. All in all a good way to see the city, hear some history and be able to spend more time at the areas of interest.
If you get that one awful guide, just get on another bus. All the other drivers and guides are wonderful and you understand them perfectly. They give you advice if you have individual requests and really try to make you feel comfortable. The tour itself is fine and they do what they can to avoid construction sites and inform you about any irregularities. At the same time they ask what you want to see and they will do their best to make you happy. Mostly this was an excellent way to understand the city, but at times, on different buses, it was hard to understand the guide talking in English. That was a small negative, compared to the convenience of moving around town on an open air bus, on a nice day, taking in the sights and learning locations for further explanations. But better sound system would be real benefit.
We rode on two buses. The first had recorded descriptions and a headset with language selection and volume. No trouble hearing or understanding the narrative. The second had live guide with English and German descriptions. The guide seemed very knowledgeable, provided more information than the recording and it was more interactive.
The bus was clean, the drivers and tour guides were very courteous, the tour guides did a good job covering English and German for all those on the buses. We got to see the important sites and not have to do all the walking and/or driving on one of the hottest days on records in Berlin.
