Full description
This walking tour, focused on East Berlin's city planning in the decades following WWII, features an expert, highly-educated local guide.

The tour follows the history of Cold-War-era East Berlin by looking at architecture and city planning. The guide will explain the changes and continuities in East German architecture. The links between political will and architecture are also highlighted.

Karl Marx Avenue is an important stop on the tour. It features a style that some East Berliners call the "Sugar Bakery Style." Others call it "Stalin-Gothic," and your guide will explain why.

Walk along the street formerly named for Stalin, learn about the workers' uprising of 1953, and see various changes in architecture that occured during the 1960s. This tour also makes stops at city hall and even features facts about medieval Berlin.

Statues of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels still stand upright. Discover their importance to the city via these architectural structures. Finally, the tour ends where local rulers once had their palace. Your expert guide explains the layers of Berlin's tantalizing history. Walk in to the past with this fascinating tour.
