Full description
Enjoy a half day tour of Mount Nebo and Madaba from Amman City. Your private English speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel.

Situated 10 kilometers west of Madaba overlooking the Jordan Valley is Mount Nebo, one of the alleged sites of the tomb of Moses. The summit of this lonely windswept site command spectacular views over the Dead Sea to the West Bank and Jerusalem. You can see the springs where Moses smote the ground to bring forth water.

Just 20 minutes south of Amman, on the Kings Highway, is the mosaic-filled city of Madaba. Crowned by a small church, this historic town lies in the middle of Jordan's most fertile land. In many respects Madaba is an atypical East Bank town which differs in one major aspect: underneath almost every house lies a fine Byzantine mosaic. Many of these mosaics have been excavated and are on display in the town's museum, but it is estimated that many more lie hidden waiting to be discovered. The finest mosaic found to date is still in its original place on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George.

After the tour is done, return to the same pick-up location (any Amman City Hotel).

The tour was interesting and entertaining. Unfortunately the weather did not play along and we only enjoyed a limited view from Mt. Nebu. We were led to a shop that supports disabled people. Handmade mosaic objects etc. are explained and offered there. Of course the goal is clear that you shop there. Sightseeing tickets are included on this tour. Our guide, who was friendly and entertaining, stayed in the car and let us visit independently without much explanation or telling the facts. We then paid the tickets out of our pocket, but then informed him that the tickets were included in our tour price. He then paid the expenses back.

Good, safe driver in a large, clean vehicle!

Our driver picked us up promptly at our hotel in Amman and drove us to Madaba, where we visited a beautiful church with ancient mosaics. Then we proceeded (optionally) to a "mosaic school" where we briefly watched students creating mosaics and pottery. We were offered tea or coffee. Then we were able to purchase items if we chose. We were told that proceeds benefited charitable causes. Next we were driven to Mount Nebo. Lots of history there. It was hazy in the afternoon so we did not see the "Promised Land" but the site was clean and well kept. There is a modern church there in which Mass was being held so we were respectfully quiet. There are ancient mosaics laid out on the floor of the church. Bear in mind that this tour was for transportation only. At both Madaba and Nebo there are opportunities to hire guides for a small fee. Having ridden in taxis and with other drivers in and around Amman we felt safe in the vehicle with our very courteous driver. Buy the Jordan Wanderer Pass!
