Top sights in Athens
The Acropolis was the center of Athenian culture and worship for millenia. As the heart of Western civilization, it's now one of the world's foremost heritage sites and an essential addition to any sightseer's bucket list. Here are a few reasons why.
The limestone hill's shallow caves and steep slopes provided prime Neolithic real estate, and its freshwater springs may have inspired the myth of Athena – a fertility goddess!
Acropolis means "highest point" and as the most fortified site, became the seat of Athenian kings until the realities of the republic pushed administrative buildings further out.
It had been a dedicated site of worship for just 30 years before being sacked by the Persians in 480BC. Afterwards, Pericles began a construction project that lasted 50 years!
The Parthenon was used as an Ottoman garrison from 1458. During the Morean War, Venetian artillery blew its gunpowder supply and significantly damaged the Acropolis' temples.
The archaeological site is still being partly restored, but you'll see the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea gateway among the ruins on your tour!
Admission prices begin at €12 (€6 concessions). Skip the lines by booking a tour in advance!

What people are saying about Acropolis of Athens
Our guide and initial greeters were kind, knowledgable and concerned for our experience. They met us in the Metro station as promised and found a place nearby for us to use the toilet at the last minute, offered cold water, warned us of pickpockets etc. The guide was informative, made time for personal requests, and showed particular concern for w/1 couple w/medical issues. The only disappointing thing was that in trying to meet personal requests/questions we ended up w/only 10 mins to explore on our own at the Acropolis top. It also seemed like the facility closed earlier than normal, but I'm not sure why. It worked out fine and is worth the money and time to see this amazing historical site.
Dorina our guide was excellent. She was very knowledgeable and energetic. She told us about history, religion, geography, and more. The tour started in a barely visited area near the Acropolis where we visited a handful of ancient sites, saw some interesting ruins, and learned a lot about the history of Athens and the Greeks. After about an hour, we climbed up to the Acropolis where we saw the major sites and learned more about them. Overall, Dorina spent over two hours with us. At the end, we had the opportunity to explore more on our own.
I loved this tour. Worth every cent. Alexia was kind caring and full of knowledge. There wasn’t a question she bouncing answer. She paced us through the acropolis up to the Parthenon with stops along the way for rest and more info. And navigated through the crowds. Nice small group. All was amazing and definitely better than the other tours being herded around. This is a must!!
We had a wonderful tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. It was amazing how much distance we covered without even realizing it! October was the ideal time to go because there was much less of a crowd and the weather was amazing. Five stars!
It works easily (use WiFi though and put the app & tour on your phone in advance). You can do everything at your own pace and decide to listen everything or just a few stories. Stories are short and easy to listen to. Great way of exploring the acropolis with all its beautiful sites!
