5. From Athens: Private Day Trip to Ancient Olympia
Discover the ancient town of Olympia on this private day trip. Pass the Corinth Canal on your way to the site of the ancient Olympic Games. Visit the museum and Temples of Zeus and Hera before heading to a local honey farm in the town, where you can sample hand-made desserts.
Your driver will meet you at your hotel in Athens to start the trip. The first stop will be at the dramatic Corinth Canal where you can stop for photos before crossing over onto the Peloponnese peninsula.
Once you arrive in Olympia, you’ll head over to the site of the ancient Olympic games. Starting from 776 B.C., the ancient Greek world would unite every four years, suspending all hostilities so that everyone could take part in these games.
Take some time to wander around the site and admire the Temple of Zeus, which once housed the gold and ivory statue of the god, considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nearby, you’ll find the Temple of Hera, one of the oldest monumental temples in Greece.
After completing the visit of the site, head to the nearby archaeological museum which houses ancient masterpieces such as the statues of Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike (Victory) of Paionios.
Next, your driver will take you to the village of Olympia, where you’ll have some free time for shopping or lunch.
The final stop will be at a local honey farm where you can enjoy a coffee or juice and sample hand-made local desserts, all made with the honey produced on the farm for generations. The owner will teach you about beekeeping, which has taken place in Olympia since ancient times.
To end the trip, your driver will drop you off at your hotel back in Athens.
