Zagori: Alpine Dragon Lake Hike

1. Zagori: Alpine Dragon Lake Hike

Embark on a mountainous adventure on a private guided hike to the Dragon Lake. This hike rewards you with magnificent mountain views, leafy forest trails, and impressive rock formations. Start the hike in the village of Mikro Papigko, which is tucked away in the middle of a lush forest. Pass through the leafy forest to see imposing rock formations surrounding you up high, known as the “Towers of Astraka”. Alpine Dragon lake hike is one of the most famous hiking routes in Greece, which combines the incredible view of the peaks of Tymfi with the enchanting natural landscape. Continue along the path to reach Astraka’s mountain hut. The hut is located at an altitude of 1,950 meters. Here, take a nice break and tuck into a nutritious lunch. Once recharged, set off to reach the legendary Dragon Lake. Learn about the Dragon Lake from your local guide. Mount Tymphi (known as Drakolimni) is located in an environment of limited nutrients, wide variations in sunlight during the summer and the winter months, and acute fluctuations in temperature have turned the Dragon Lake of Mt. Tymfi into a truly unique ecosystem. Hear how the lake's waters are home to the Alpine Newt, a striking amphibian that has been around for thousands of years. It is approximately 10-12 centimeters long with an impressive orange-red color in the lower part of its body – looking remarkably similar to a tiny dragon! Stop to take in the striking natural landscape around you. To the north is the Smolikas mountain range and the Aoos Valley, and to the east is the impressive Mount Gamila. After having your fill of nature, head back to Mikro Papigo, following the same route, before returning to your hotel.
