Trail starts and ends at Small Papingo village. Difficulty level: moderate. Equipment: mountain sports shoes or hiking boots, suntan cream, sunglasses, waterproof jacket, canteen, walking or hiking poles (optional) and backpack. Before the start hikers get information from a certified guide for the trail, equipment and safety During the hike visitors may take a few breaks to drink water from the springs while observing flowers (mostly wild lily) with vivid colors growing at high altitudes and the huge “towers” of Astraka mountain. At the end of the hike, at 2,000 meters altitude, there is the Dragon Lake where hikers may take a break to absorb the magnificent scenery. You can see in the lake the Alpine Tritons or search for wild goats at the cliffs. On the way back there is a planned visit to the natural swimming pools in order to relax.

2. Mikro Papigko: Dragon Lake Alpine Guided Hike with Lunch

The 1 day Dragon Lake Hike starts in the village of Mikro Papigko, which is tucked away in the midst of a lush forest. As we pass through the beautiful forest, we have the imposing rock formations, known as the “Towers of Astraka” in full view! Continuing on our path, we reach Astraka’s mountain hut. The hut is located at an altitude of 1.950 meters. A nice break and nutritious lunch is in order! After recharging our batteries, we set off to reach the legendary Dragon Lake. The stunning alpine lake called by locals dragon lake (drakolimni in Greek), is believed to be a remnant of the Ice Age. This harsh environment of limited nutrients, wide variations in sunlight during the summer and the winter months and acute fluctuations in temperature have turned the Dragon lake of Mt Tymphi into a truly unique ecosystem. From here we take in the breathtaking views! To the north is the Smolikas mountain range and the Aoos Valley and to the east is the impressive Mount Gamilla. Then we head back to the village of Mikro Papigo following the same route.

Embark on a mountainous adventure on a private guided hike to Dragon Lake from Zagori. The Alpine Dragon Lake hike is one of the most famous hiking routes in Greece, combining the incredible view of the peaks of Tymfi with the enchanting natural landscape. Tuck into a delicious picnic lunch and a meal in a mountain hut during your hike. Start the hike in the village of Mikro Papigko, which is tucked away in the middle of a lush forest. Pass through the forest to see imposing rock formations known as the “Towers of Astraka”. En route, marvel at magnificent mountain views, leafy forest trails, and impressive rock formations. Continue along the path to reach Astraka’s mountain hut, located at an altitude of 1,950 meters. Here, take a nice break and tuck into a nutritious lunch. Once recharged, set off to reach the legendary Dragon Lake. En route, spot the vibrantly colored Alpine Newt that has been around this area for thousands of years. Stop and take in the striking natural landscape around you. To the north is the Smolikas mountain range and the Aoos Valley, and to the east is the impressive Mount Gamila. After having your fill of nature, head back to Mikro Papigo, following the same route.

A magnificent alpine lake offering wonderful views of high peaks surrounding it and the path leading to it. We start our ascent at the village of Mikro Papigko, following a well-carved path to the mountain refuge of Astraka. Throughout the climb, we have excellent views of the Towers of Papigko and Mount Nemertsika (in Albania), among others. Then we descend to the dry (in summer months) Xerolimni Lake, which formed by glaciers millions of years ago. After that, a steep hike to the lake, rewarding us with the satisfaction of climbing it, the Balkan chamois (goat-antelope) population wondering what we do at their habitat and wonderful views of the Aoos canyon and Mount Smolikas (the second-highest in Greece)
