Full description
Your full-day excursion to Samaria Gorge begins with pickup in Heraklion and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains, where you can enjoy breakfast before you begin your hike. The trek will take you over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river by fresh-water springs. Along the way, you’ll have spectacular views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range, and you are also likely to see mountain goats roaming in the wild. You will be accompanied by a professional mountain escort who speaks English, German and Greek. Your escort will be there to explain all the necessary information about your hike and provide you with the tickets for the entrance and ferry. After your breakfast you will enter the Samaria Gorge, where you can walk at your own pace as your guide waits at the end of the group to help you out if you need them. At the end of the trek you’ll visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops. You can enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where your bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

The pick up was way to late, and we could not reach anybody of the organisation. However the tourguide was very friendly, and even gave us some food in the gorge. The tour was well organisted, and the guide was waiting for you on every the rest location. It was a really nice hike and the gorge was really beautiful!

The tour was an amazing experience for us! Ist was really well-organised and we have seen so much of nature. Of course one has to wear good shoes and must be fit to be able to manage the 16 kilometres of hiking, but we would absolutely reccomend doing this tour!

I highly recommend having this beautiful experience in the hinterland of Crete! You will find yourself immersed in the wildest nature with enormous rocks, trees with unusual shaped trunks, rocky walls more or less smoothed by the wind and several small streams to cross, in which I even drank without having consequences of any kind. The most evocative part is when you get to the valley, in the middle of the cliffs hundreds of meters high and centuries-old trees that grow in that same stone, I really felt very small at that moment! I warmly thank our guide "Athina" for coming to recover me, because on too many occasions I have stopped to contemplate the weighings, thus wasting a lot of time. (Thank you so much Athina!)
