Full description

Take a day trip from Rethymno to set out on an outdoor adventure into Samaria Gorge National Park. Hike at your own pace with a guide over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees, along a river, and by fresh-water springs. Keep an eye out for mountain goats roaming in the wild.

Begin your full-day excursion to Samaria Gorge with a pick-up in Rethymno and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains, where you can enjoy breakfast before you start the hike.

Be accompanied by a mountain escort who speaks English, German and French. Get briefed about your hike and get your tickets for the entrance and ferry boat from your escort. These fees have to be paid to the guide upon arrival.

After breakfast, enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace as your guide will be at the end of the group to help out if you need them. At the end of the trek, visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars, and shops.

Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon, board a boat to go from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

Amazing walk. First 7 km have a lot of shade. Latter part more exposed but totally fine walking it in August. Also trainers are absolutely fine - no need for walking boots. Obviously virtually all of it is downhill or flat so no big climbs in extreme heat. Swim and boat trip are a bonus at the end.

This was my highlight of Crete! The guide was very knowledgeable and swapped between English, German and French effortlessly. The driver took us safely up the mountain roads and we stopped at a little taverna (make sure you pick up last snacks and visit the WC here) before heading to the gorge entrance. The trek is demanding. You will be walking up and down and over small and larger rocks. Hiking shoes/trainers with a good grip are a must. It inevitably gets hotter after lunch and there is less shade on that part of the walk, so make sure you keep hydrating and take rests as and when you need them. There are welcome tavernas when you get to the village serving food and drinks and the waters at the beach are crystal clear. You can walk the gorge at your own pace, but the guide was simply superb and gave all relevant information. I loved this trip.

We made the reservation last minute due to a change of plans on our vacation week - and we're really happy that we did! It was incredible! This was our second time hiking Samaria Gorge (first time was back in 2018) but it's such an amazing experience that I hope to do it for a third time as well. It really is the most impressive thing I've ever done/seen on any of my travels. The tour guide was lovely and had a nice sense of humor and I actually learned a lot.
