Full description
Explore the famous Samaria Gorge on a trip along the northern coastline of Crete and through the White Mountains up to the Omalos Plateau. Samaria Gorge became a National Park in 1962 and today, it is the last natural refuge for the Cretan goat species known as Kri-Kri. Depart early in the morning and board a coach which will pick you up from your hotel. After a comfortable drive, arrive at the plateau of Omalos for a small break before heading to the entrance of the gorge. The start of the hiking trail through the gorge is at a height of 1200m. On the route, pass by rich vegetation and through the tall rock walls known as the "Iron Gates". Fill up your water bottle at one of the springs in the gorge. At the end of the 17km walk, reach the Libyan Sea. There, at the beach of Ayia Roumeli, enjoy a refreshing swim or sit at one of the taverns until a ferry takes the group to Chora Sfakion where the bus will be waiting for you to return you back to your hotel.

one must not forget that it is 17 km. and the paths are only made of rubble. Although it is nice to look at, I twisted my knee and had to rely on the help of a ranger, who then brought me out of the gorge on a horse from km 7. and I just made it to the ship. At this point, a big thank you to the rangers. the time is too short in my opinion. otherwise well organized

+ Points: The driver was very nice and punctual at all hotels and drove at a comfortable pace (not like the public bus drivers ... they race up and down the serpentines and love the horn) The driver gave everyone a free map of the gorge Planned stopovers and information (toilet etc.) The gorge was beautiful and the price for the bus is justified. Additional info: hiking boots are a must. Best with ankle protection because you really hike over hill and dale. Blister plasters and a head covering are also recommended / compulsory! Even for experienced hikers it is very demanding in summer. - Points: Due to Corona, fewer than 100 people were in the gorge that day (instead of over 1000), which is why only 1 ferry left at the end. This drove in the "wrong" direction and so the driver was waiting in the wrong city ... so we had to take a public bus to Chania, where he picked us up. ! Let us give you his cell phone number!

Great adventure and very nice landscape

We were picked up right on time in the morning at the hotel. The journey through the mountains already offered many impressions of nature. With a short stop shortly before arrival, you could go to the toilet again (definitely recommended) and get the necessary provisions. The process was then explained in the parking lot in front of the gorge. Then the descent began. We were very happy that we had packed our hiking shoes. The path was relatively difficult in some places. We also had a bottle of water with us, which we could fill up at the springs. It is also advisable to pack a cap and sun protection. Although there were many hikers, the crowd was very well distributed on the way. Sometimes we were even alone. After arriving at the sea, there is nothing more refreshing than jumping into the cool water. In the evening we took the ship along the coast back to the bus. Highly Recommended!
