Caprarola has always been an expression of Farnese’s power and the palace is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture. You will be able to walk the spiral staircase called Scala Regia or the "Royal Stairs" and see the Piano dei Prelati floor, which leads to the broad terrace. You can witness the amazing frescoes of the winter suite, the famous "Room of the World Map" or “Sala del Mappamondo”, displaying the world as it was in 1574 when the frescoes were completed. The Royal Staircase is next and is already being hailed as a masterpiece of Vignola's, having been imitated several times throughout history. The most original aspect of the structure is its helicoidal structure inspired by Bramante's great "snail" in the Vatican. The gardens of the villa are as impressive as the building itself, a significant example of a Renaissance Italian garden. They sit behind the palace and are divided into a winter garden and a summer garden. A walk through the chestnut woods leads to the "giardino segreto", or secret garden, with its 28 statues. What people are saying about Civitavecchia

Interesting tour and good value for money

This was probably the best value tour we took out of 11 over a recent Med cruise. Our guide (Andrea Gringana ?spelling) was enthusiastic, friendly and informative but not "in your face". Everything was included in the price - travel, coffee, lunch, entrance tickets. We decided that a switch-over day in Civitavecchia was probably not long enough to go to Rome for a sensible period of time so we stayed locally. We'd never heard of Tarquinia past or present but it's well worth a visit. The only thing to note is that the ancient Etruscan necropolis consists of rooms underground, each reached by a steep staircase and therefore this tour is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The size of the port of Civitavecchia and the rules associated with it mean that the guide cannot meet you inside the port gates so you need to take the shuttle bus to the entrance and meet them at the drop-off point immediately outside.

Andrea was amazing, he was very knowledgeable as a guide. He definitely knows his way around the area and he definitely knows his stuff! We arrived slightly earlier and he managed to meet us and tweaked the itinerary so we can fit in more sightseeing views on the way to the cellars. Andrea’s choice of the wine cellars was top notch! The wine was amazing, the people at the winery were so knowledgeable and welcoming and the views were beyond compare. Andrea even tried to fit in an extra cellar in the day when he found out our preferences, really exceptional! I highly recommend Andrea if you are planning this journey. And take with you swimming suits as you get to take a dip in the Terme Di Saturnia!

Go outside port drop off. Look for your name immediately On small sign. Away from Crowded bus tours. See authentic small town, meet the local meat & cheese man..very hospitable. Lake is warm for swimming. Erna was great showing us the sites. Thank you Erna ! We could not finish the outstanding Italian lunch. Catered to vegetarians! Boat did not make port until next day and GYG made a call to arranged the tour again ! In 5 minutes ! AT NO EXTRA COST. 12 day cruise....a tour each port....By far the two GYG Tours were the most Authentic and enjoyable. Thank you GYG for connecting us with guides like Erna! I am sold on GYG.

Great tour if your looking to get away from the crowds. our driver was prompt, personable, knowledgeable and genuinely proud of her city/country. Time on site was more than adequate. You do have to descend stairs in order to see tombs.

We were lucky to have Andrea as driver and guide. We had plenty of time for necropolis and Tarquinia wonderful museum. Andrea made us discover the rich and beautiful city of Tarquinia. Restaurant was authentic and nice.
