Full description
This tour offers the most scenic and popular downhill mountain bike ride in Chiang Mai. Your day kicks off with transfer from your hotel at 9:30 AM and a comprehensive safety and bike fit-out briefing. After a 45-minute drive to the top of Doi Pui Mountain, you’ll take a short test ride to get comfortable with the equipment.   Finally ready, you’ll head off towards Hill Top Coffee Plantation along a small jeep track. If you’re a beginner, your guide will help you with your downhill riding techniques. Follow the track covered by spectacularly large tree canopies to enjoy the cooler temperatures before arriving at the first resting point. Take a break and maybe try a cup of local coffee as you soak in the mountain air and views! Home to the friendly Hmong Hill Tribe People, you will witness the rural living and farming in Northern Thailand’s mountains.   The second route you will take requires your full attention, as the wild growth of the forest hugs the track. For advanced riders, there are single tracks paralleling the moderately challenging jeep route to get their technical single-track fix (advanced riders know what I'm talking about!). There will be plenty of fantastic viewpoints for rest stops and lightly mixed terrain to challenge you as your ride continues down towards Lake Huay Tueng Tao at the base of the mountain. Arriving at the lake, you’ll enjoy a dip if you like, a well-deserved meal and amazing views of the mountain that just gave you an awesome 3+ hour mountain bike descent adventure. Then it’s time to head back to Chiang Mai, the lazy way: by truck, which will have you back around 3:30 PM.

It was a nice trip and the tour guide did a good job. Along the way he explained everything about nature and guided us well down the mountain. There are a few small climbs in the tour, but those are easy to do and walking is always an option. The descents are sometimes quite steep and depending on the weather (mud) or slippery, quite tough but doable. The tour guide clearly indicates how you can best approach the descent. If you want to do them on foot, you will be given the space to do so, but that was not necessary in our case. During the tour you will see some of the area, but if your goal is to see the temple and get a taste of Thai life in the countryside, you might want to go for another tour. If you are going for a nice mountain bike ride, this might be a nice tour for you. The material we use was well-organized and safety was taken into account.

Being over 60 and not super fit I was worried that it would be too much for me. But I had a great ride down the mountain. However, one person did not have the fitness level or the required skills and balance to ride the bike down the sometimes steep and slippery section. They had to be picked up by 4WD. I would suggest, consider you limits, but be willing to push them. Do this trip and be rewarded with a great ride down the mountain.

Anyone looking for a little adventure is in good hands here! For me it was my first time on a mountain bike and on the muddy ground (it was raining) a real challenge. But the guide was incredibly patient and very motivating! We visited a coffee plantation, repeatedly took breaks and ended up having a delicious snack by the lake. An eventful day with a great group!
