  • Crete: Hiking Tour in Samaria Gorge

    1. Crete: Hiking Tour in Samaria Gorge

Experience the Samaria Gorge and descend from the Omalos Plateau. Descend into the gorge, measuring 18 kilometers long, 4 by 150 meters wide, and up to 700 meters deep. The exploration will take from 4 to 6 hours.   Hike through the longest gorge in Europe and admire the beauty and diversity of nature. The smallest section of the gorge is only approximately 4 meters wide and the cliffs reach heights of 350 meters — enjoy this incredible sight. At midday, stop in the fishing village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea and relax in the taverns or take a dip in the crystal clear blue waters. In the late afternoon, take a 1-hour boat tour from Agia Roumeli, past the mighty rocks of the south coast of Crete to Hora Sfakion. A bus will be waiting there to take you back to your accommodation.

This tour is arranged for travel to and from Samaria Gorge. We started in Heraklion at approximately 5:00 AM and got back approximately 10:30 PM. The mini buses and tour buses were comfortable. The guide was average; not overly friendly or particularly informative. You basically hike on your own and just meet the group to catch a ferry at 5:00 PM. The hike was more physical than we had anticipated, but people of all ages and fitness levels made it successfully. We wish we had know that there was no way to buy food in the national park. We would have bought more power bars or sandwiches the day before and packed them for the trip.

  • Samariá Gorge Hike: Day Excursion from Chania

    2. Samariá Gorge Hike: Day Excursion from Chania

From its jaw-dropping villages to its healthy Mediterranean cuisine, Crete is a feast for the senses. The stunning beauty of Samariá Gorge National Park is an important part of the island’s attraction. On this full-day excursion you’ll be picked up in Chania and travel by comfortable bus to the park. Get ready to be wowed by the gorge, as high limestone cliffs and quaint village create the background for a great hike. The walking tour from one end of Samaria gorge to the other is a challenging 18 kilometers. The terrain in the gorge is rough, rocky, and uneven and the hike is not suitable for anyone who has heart problems or is unfit, or for pregnant women. There are a number of stopping points along the route, where you’ll find toilets and drinking water. At some points the gorge is only 3 meters wide and you may have to climb over boulders. You’ll reach the end of the gorge at Agia ...

This hike is beautiful, however because you have to watch each step due to the many rocks you walk over you can't take in all the beauty it has to offer.

  • From Agios Nikolaos Area: Samaria Gorge Day Trip

    3. From Agios Nikolaos Area: Samaria Gorge Day Trip

After pickup from your hotel in Agios Nikolaos or Elounda, you’ll head straight to the Omalos plateau, followed by Xyloskalo, the northernmost entrance to the Samaria Gorge. The walk begins with a descent into the bottom of the gorge, changing altitude by over 600 meters. Gaze up at the stark, lush cliffs that line the narrow canyon, keeping your eyes peeled for the rare kri-kri goat, a species endemic to Crete and known for its massive, curled horns. About halfway into the walk, you’ll find the ruins of the Samaria Village, whose inhabitants were relocated after the region was designated as a national park. After a small rest, you’ll continue through the Gorge, passing the church of Osia Maria, from which the gorge takes its name. Shortly thereafter, reach the most famous portion of gorge—the Gates, where the path narrows to less than 10 feet, while cliffs rise over 1,000 feet in the a...

Beautiful hike! Difficult for those who don’t have the best grip since it’s almost always downhill. However, after the first hour it is quite manageable (but long of course, took me 6 hours in total). Elena was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, friendly and (which I loved!) she reminded people to wear a mask on the bus. The Tour was overall really well organized with minimized waiting times (except for the afternoon, where you get to spend time in the village by the sea, but this was quite nice and doesn’t count as waiting time). The bus driver also did a very nice job. Only minor criticism I have is the breakfast break (20 minutes) which seemed unnecessary. Nevertheless, I highly recommend to do this hike with this company!

Great adventure, but would recommend walking boots. Be very careful to obey rules on keeping to path and stop walking to admire flora and fauna and taking photos. Quite arduous if you are not used to walking in the heat of the day. But please don’t be put off just be very careful where you step.

Very long and very hot, exhausting day but so worth it to visit the gorge! Please be prepared with actual hiking shoes or you will not make it through the entire hike. Water is frequently available at rest areas on the journey. The gorge is worth it and beautiful!

Really excellent. You're paying for the convience of everything being organised for you and they do just that. Coach picked us up from very near our airbnb and our tour gide Thomas was great, clear instructions on what to do when and a great charm as well.

Very well organised trip - the pick-up point was very close to our camping, the whole day was well planned with the bus rides, hike, ship transfers.
