  • From Rethymno/Chania: Imbros Gorge Hike

    4. From Rethymno/Chania: Imbros Gorge Hike

Discover the Imbros Gorge, which runs parallel to the more famous Samaria Gorge. Although the Imbros Gorge is smaller, many people prefer to cross here because it offers a very different hiking experience than the Samaria Gorge. Of the 11 kilometers, 8.5 kilometers are suitable for hiking. Discover the exquisite beauty of nature in this narrow passage and learn about the stunning rock formations.  According to legend, the name Imbros was given to the village, and subsequently the gorge, because two Greek brothers chose to live here after they were banished from Imbros Island when it was connected to Turkey. For many years, the Imbros Gorge served as part of the trail that connected the city of Chania to the Hora Sfakion village. It is notable that during World War II, after the Battle of Crete was lost by Greece and her allies, many thousands of British soldiers passed through the Imbro...

Everything was organised very well. We were picked up from near where we stayed and driven to the start of the gorge. Had to buy our own tickets. Make sure you have cash before you leave because the ticket office only accepts cash and there's no ATM anywhere there. Also make sure you have water because, unlike Samaria gorge, there is no water anywhere inside. You can wait at a tavern on the other side for your bus which will take you to the sea. We only had about an hour to get to the beach, swim, change and come back but it was enough. The bus then took us all home. Great experience!

Beautiful hike! Difficult for those who don’t have the best grip since it’s almost always downhill. However, after the first hour it is quite manageable (but long of course, took me 6 hours in total). Elena was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, friendly and (which I loved!) she reminded people to wear a mask on the bus. The Tour was overall really well organized with minimized waiting times (except for the afternoon, where you get to spend time in the village by the sea, but this was quite nice and doesn’t count as waiting time). The bus driver also did a very nice job. Only minor criticism I have is the breakfast break (20 minutes) which seemed unnecessary. Nevertheless, I highly recommend to do this hike with this company!

The spectacular Samaria Gorge. A day not to forget. And in the end I swim on the beach. The only negative is that in the coach and with the current situation of the Covid19 pandemic, the obligation to wear a mask would have to be scrupulously enforced by everyone.

Really excellent. You're paying for the convience of everything being organised for you and they do just that. Coach picked us up from very near our airbnb and our tour gide Thomas was great, clear instructions on what to do when and a great charm as well.

We had a wonderful time today with Andreas on our tour. We got to see a part of Crete that many overlook, the local areas. Loved the visit to the distillery, the museum was quite nice, the bakery was amazing, and overall, a great trip.

Amazing experience. It is quite difficult hike and you must be careful to not get injured. Suggest to have proper hiking shoes since with my soft pad sneakers I was feeling every rock and was quite slippery
