From Athens: Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Private Trip

10. From Athens: Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Private Trip

Cape Sounion is one of the most popular destinations in Athens, but it's not easy to visit due to its distance from main roads. This makes it a perfect destination for private tours, especially if you've got some time to spare. With this private excursion, you'll be able to explore Athens without getting lost or waiting at long lines. Your Personal Guide and Driver will take care of all your requests while they deliver you to the top of the mountain as well as the next stop on your itinerary. The temple of Poseidon is a magnificent sight to see. It was built around the 6th century BC, and it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple has been used as a church since 1884, but it still contains some original structural pieces from the temple’s construction. You will walk to the top of Cape Sounion and then to Poseidon’s Temple. Take a stroll up the mountain until you reach the ruins of Poseidon’s Temple. The temple is a beautiful structure with white marble columns and arches, which make it look like an ancient Greek ruin. Once you get up close, you can see the beautiful carvings that were made on the walls. Poseidon’s Temple is one of the most popular tourist places in all of Greece, so it’s always full of people and families. If you want to get a good view into the temple, you can climb up one of its many pillars or ascend by way of an imposing stairway in the back. The Temple of Poseidon was first built in the 6th century BC and was renovated in the 5th century AD, so you can see a mix of Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture. The temple sits on a rock formation that is approximately 80 meters high and faces westwards towards Cape Sunion. The temple measures about 60 meters by 36 meters and is built from roughly cut limestone blocks. The temple was never actually completed and is rather small compared to other Greek temples. It has a peristyle, colonnade and sanctuary that makes it seem like a more Roman style temple. The columns within the sanctuary are Doric style and made from the local limestone of the island (called "jelab"). The end of your journey, the view of the Aegean Sea and an eternal present awaits you at this majestic place. The wealth of history will make you leave with a deeper understanding of ancient Greece and its religion, philosophy and mythology. Once the tour is over, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Athens.

What people are saying about Central Greece

The sunset tour was amazing. Our guide, Katerina was an encyclopedia of information & had a very contagious cheerful attitude. Yoseph was an exceptional driver. He even helped clear a traffic jam during the trip. The morning hike is an exhausting, vigorous hike around the back of some of the northern most monasteries & inside one. It finishes with a hike down a trail winding around below the monasteries to the awaiting van. Wear good shoes & be ready for wind.

Guides were great! We had marina i think and stellios, it was a fun journey from start to finish into the parnithia mountain lovely trees and flowers all the way and the dining place was breathtaking

Excellent! Do not miss it for nothing. The company we had was Meteora thrones, really good. The hotel was ok and had a view of the rocks. Everything went well and on time. Highly recommend.

Great guides and smooth organization ! The Meteora is a place you should not miss, it's breath taking. Thanks to the tour, we were able to make the most of it.

We booked the 2 days excursion to Meteora, highly recommended, we were also lucky with our guide Dimitros, who gave good explanations with a touch of humor
