Located west of Rome on the mouth of the Tiber River, like the magnificent Pompeii also the state of conservation and the urban structure of Ostia Antica (from ostium "mouth of the river") has come almost intact to our days. Founded in the 4th century bc as a first military camp and port trading center after related to grain procurement. Equipped with a lighthouse, horrea (granary depots), scholae (seats for professional associations), insulae (large blocks of rent) and the capitolium ostia reached in its greates splendour under the emperor Traiano with a population over 100.000 inhabitants. Its inevitable decline began in 3rd century AD. A careful observation of the city is particularly useful as it allows us to know many aspects of everyday during Roman period: In addition to the presence of various temples, spas, domus and elegant buildings, there were also warehouses, inns and shops that make us a slice of the vitality of this center. It was a city with a commercial soul: this made it a cosmopolitan city, in which people of different races, languages, cultures, religions lived together, testified by the strong presence of temples dedicated to Mitra (Persian), Cybele (Phrygian), Isis (Egyptian) in addition to the presence of a synagogue. The first seaport of ancient Ostia was that built by Claudius in 42 ad, near the present airport of Fiumicino, which was later expanded by the emperor Trajan. Ostia was then the main center of sorting commercial goods directed to the City, becoming rich and prestigious.
