Stabiae: Guided Tour with an Archaeologist

4. Stabiae: Guided Tour with an Archaeologist

Stabiae was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and the site was declared an archaeologically protected area in 1957. By 1962, many of the ruins had been uncovered. In recent times, the excavations have revealed two famous Roman villas, Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna, with frescoes, statues, sculptures and mosaics similar to those already found in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Among the numerous villas of the Stabiae archaeological residential area, only the Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna can be visited. The distance between them is about 1 kilometer. The tour will start at the Villa San Marco, perfectly preserved, where you will find still evident in the hall, the kitchens, the peristyle with a long natation, various frescoed rooms and thermal quarter in which the extraordinary caldarium is well-preserved with the structures used for heating. Then, transfer to the Villa Arianna, featuring a large peristyle, several decorated panoramic rooms and an interesting thermal area.

What people are saying about Castellammare di Stabia

Collected on time from our hotel in a comfortable SUV and having collected a few other travelers on the way, we were dropped at the harbour to be whisked across the bay in a speedboat, looked after by two lovely crew on board. Collected from marina by minibus (spotlessly clean) and brought to Vesuvius while being given some information by our lovely guide. You're dropped off quite high up and left to walk the remaining bit on foot (about 40mins) to the top. Breathtaking views over bay of Naples. Brought for a nice lunch in vineyard/horse riding school and then on to Pompeii where we were given an informative and entertaining tour by our private guide. Back to the speedboat and returned across the bay, stopping off for 30 mins or so for people to hop in for a swim - those who didn't were treated to a glass of prosecco. Dropped back to the hotel by private bus. 11 people in total on the tour and there was good banter between us which made it all more enjoyable.

It was all brilliantly organised and we were treated incredibly well from the moment we were picked up, to the moment we were dropped back at our hotel. The tour guides Anna and Genaro (wife and husband) were really friendly, insightful and lots of fun and the captain and crew on the boat couldn’t have done anymore to help, with the wine, limoncello and cakes on our return journey. The icing on the cake was returning by boat whilst the sun was setting. Magical. Exceeded all our expectations. Highly recommend.

This tour was the highlight of my trip. It was amazing how much we experienced in one day and I wouldn’t change a thing. The tour guides were very friendly and well organized. Vesuvius was a great way to start the day. Lunch at the winery was a perfect way to take a break and the food was delicious. We learned so much during our tour of Pompeii. Getting picked up and returned back to our hotel made things so easy. I would highly recommend this tour and would do it again if I return.

very organized team, all guides very nice and with fantastic stories for us to tell. nice ride and full of interesting things. good food included in this tour, also great pick up service and we were able to take our luggage to get off in sorrento
