Cagliari: Guided Shore Excursion to Santa Cristina Village

5. Cagliari: Guided Shore Excursion to Santa Cristina Village

This combination tour will take you into the heart of Sardinia, into a little town called Paulilatino. On the tour, learn about Sardinian history, the Nuragic civilization and their monuments. Discover the Nuragic village walking through Nuraghe, the temple and cemetery. The well temple of Santa Cristina (12th-century BC) is one of the finest examples of the elaborate religious architecture of the Nuragic era. The nuraghe structure consists of an entranceway (dromos) with steps leading to an underground, circular domed chamber (tholos), all surrounded by an enclosing wall (temenos). The walls of the stairway and underground chamber are made from finely cut ashlar blocks of alkali basalt rock. Santa Cristina can without a doubt be considered the most representative structure of the Sardinian well temples. In the area surrounding the temple, you'll find the remains of a village, at the front of which stands a 'meeting hut' with a circular stone seat. Visit an old village and church from the Middle Ages. Your local guide will be keen to make the tour as personal as possible. He will assist you with his expertise and recall interesting anecdotes for you before bringing you back to your cruise ship.

One of the highlights of our trip, our guide Valeria was fantastic.

The drive to the ancient site of these cone shaped constructions of the Nuragic settlement through the undulating country side was amazing. Valeria shared her knowledge of archaeology and the love for her country and people with generous enthusiasm. It was truly awesome climbing into the the tower's ground level cave. Inside the Tholos we experienced for a contemplative moment a sense of eternity. We feel very privileged to have visited this site. Seeing the miniature horses of the Giara region was a bonus. Our visit the next day to the National Archaeological Museum at Cagliari where we could view the finds of the Nuragic civilisations' jewellery, tools, pottery, statuettes and weaving exhibits further deepened our learning experience of this truly wonderful visit.

Claudia is an outstanding guide and we had a wonderful afternoon in this extraordinary place. We were the only people there. Claudia shared her huge knowledge of time, place and people so engagingly, so clearly and enthusiastically, that we really were taken back around 5,000 years (an almost ungraspable length of time). In this magical setting, we felt really close to the people of then and so very respectful of the ways they honoured their dead. And it wasn't all deep history, we also had a lot of fun and laughter. Highly, highly recommend.

Excellent hal-day trip to learn about ancient history of Sardegna

The tour was very well organized, and we enjoyed it very much. We were able to hear about brief overview and history about Sardegna on the way to Su Nuraxi , which gave us a good view of the land we're travelling. At the site, we were amazed by the complexity structure of the Nuraghe, as well as the level of civilization. It was certainly impressive, and the guidance given by the guide helped us to understand the background of the history as well.

Highly informative and friendly experience. Both Nora and Pula are “must see” places. Our guide (Franco) was excellent, spoke great English, was polite and happy to stop and allow us to take photo etc. Franco helped navigate us around large groups of visitors to get the best out of the day and even took us to a site in Cagliari we hadn’t seen before as an “extra”. Highly recommend this trip.

Franco was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable of the area. He went above and beyond to assist us with questions about the area even after our tour. Very conscientious of our time. Did not have us wait in long lines but knew how to take advantage of the site to use our time wisely. Highly recommend.
