Full description
Start the tour in front of Saint Stephen's Basilica where you will meet your local guide. Take a guided tour inside the church to see its rich interior covered with gold and decorated with many frescos and sculptures made by the best local artists of the late 19th century. The church is one of Budapest’s highlights, known for its monumental dome and beautiful Neo-Renaissance architecture. See the mysterious relic, the Holy Right, which is the mummified right hand of the first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen, who ruled the country in the 11th century. Saint Stephen is credited with converting much of Hungary to Christianity.
From here, walk to Pest Inner City across Elisabeth Square and Deak Square. See the facade of the main Lutheran Church built in the 19th century. Note the impressive statue of the priest of the church who saved the lives of about 2000 Jewish children during World War 2. Make your way through the historic Old Town area and arrive at Saint Anne's Church, the Baroque gem Budapest. This church has been preserved since the 18th Century and features amazing ornaments, a huge organ, stunning altarpieces, a rich wooden pulpit, and various carvings. On the facade of the church, see the marble sculpture of Christ.
Next, make your way to the Danube riverbank. Here you will find the oldest Catholic church of Pest, the Medieval-Gothic Great Blessed Queen Church. This church has hosted many royal weddings throughout the centuries. Once inside the church, discover Roman ruins, former Medieval foundations, colorful fresco fragments from the 14th Century, and amazing Renaissance marble carvings from the early 1500's. Finish the tour in the most famous shopping street in the city, Vaci utca.
