Full description
Enjoy a fascinating 3-hour tour exploring the communist roots of the great city of Bucharest. Discuss the day to day life of Romanians during communism, from ration cards to the black market, to propaganda and the secret police. As the dominant political ideology for more than 40 years, Bucharest is full of souvenirs of its communist past. Begin the tour in Unirii Square, one of the largest squares in central Bucharest originally built during the Communist era and bisected by the massive Unirii Boulevard. Continue the tour and explore the new districts of the "Socialist realism" built during the reign of Nicolae Ceausescu, including the Palace of the Parliament, designed as the absolute center of power, and the buildings of the Civic Centre Project. Discover the hidden churches that the communists wanted to forget about. See the contrast between the elegant city architecture and the communist blocks.  End the tour in front of the balcony where Ceausescu held his last speech, the Revolution Square. Hear the story of the '89 Revolution and Romania's transition into democracy.

Elena was Superb in every aspect of this tour. We got see some extras too as I’m a WW2 enthusiast, tour went at a leisurely pace & we had enough time at each stop without feeling rushed. I learnt so much on the tour & a lot of that credit goes too Elena!!

I really enjoyed being able to interact with my guide Elena who has spent so much time researching and looking at romania’s history from so many perspectives. It gave me a really balanced view and I know so much more now than I did before!!! It was a really excellent tour!
