Full description

Travel back in time on a half-day tour of Bucharest, once known as “Little Paris,” and discover what the city was like during the Communist era, when Bucharest was a dark place to be. The era has left its mark on the city and you will discover some places with relevance to Bucharest under Communism. Walk through the Old Town to see firsthand the effects of the nationalization process led by the Communist regime over the beautiful turn of the century architecture of Bucharest.

Venture behind the megalomaniac structures surrounding the Palace of the Parliament and find remnants of the former city. Visit some of the churches of Bucharest that were moved to avoid destruction under Communism.  For a change of scenery, climb Patriarchy Hill to experience firsthand the massive changes the city underwent during the 70s and 80s.

Then hop on the tram and ride to one of the communist neighborhoods of the city, erected to house the thousands of people relocated from the country to the capital to work on massive construction sites.

See examples of true socialist architecture and feel how day-to-day life was unfolding for the average inhabitant of Bucharest during that time.  Brace yourself for a surprising turn into a green oasis of the city. Hidden among the concrete, find Carol Park and the former burial site of the first communist leaders.

Cross the street to see the Heroes of the Revolution memorial and cemetery and finish your tour with tales of the 1989 revolution that ended the Communist regime in Romania.

Return to Unirii Square and make sure to ask your local guide for tips on where to eat, drink, and shop in this hidden gem of a European capital city.

Terrific. Hugely informative and unique

Doru was outstanding. He was clearly knowledgeable about the area and the subject matter of communism in Bucharest. It was also clear he knew a great deal about other nations too. Doru was also accommodating to our infant daughter and went above and beyond to ensure she was taken care of. He even drove to our lunch location to return the phone I left in his car. Great tour.

Super interesting!

The tour gave us a LOT of information about the city and it´s communist history and made us look at all the buildings and their significance from new perspectives. You could ask the guide questions through out and he had great knowledge, since the guide we got grew up during the communist period. So it was interesting to hear not only big historical facts but also details about the daily life for people back then. Highly, recommended!
