There are several villages around the region that share the Saint-Émilion name, such as Montagne-Saint-Émilion and St-Georges-Saint-Émilion which are named the satellite appellations. The area is bordered to the west by Pomerol. Merlot is the dominant grape in this area, followed by Cabernet Franc and a very small quantity of Malbec that is tending to disappear. Our guide Yan was both knowledgeable and passionate about the winelands and the wine traditions. Our first stop was Chateaux Haute Sarpe where we were escorted through the yards (stopping to see the oldest pub in St Emilion) to the ageing cellar. After we’d learned about the process of bottling, ageing, and all the requirements to meet the Grand Cru Classe label we were taken to St Emilion to do a wine tasting in a local wine boutique. Then we were guided through the town with Yan enlightening us on the history and geography of the surrounding area. The second chateaux was an altogether more modern one where we tasted wine made according to modern methods (including ageing the wine in terra cotta vats - which is an age old tradition!!). Then back to Bordeaux with Yan chatting knowledgeably all the way about the area, wine, tradition and anything that came up. What a fabulous experience!!

So much to see, so little time ... You can spend the whole day here. Interactive, fun, beautiful inside and out. You can smell, touch, hear, see. Interesting for all ages. Loved it. Great value for the buck. I just wish I had arrived earlier.

Well chosen wine chateaus, each featuring a unique strength. One organic, one Grand Cru Classe, one from an adjacent area that produces fine wines at a lower price point making for an excellent value. Stan was a wonderful host/guide.

Amiable tour guide, amazing landscape, and had a great time! I highly recommend this tour.

We were in a small group, 8 plus our guide Charles. Really lovely morning.
