The prevalence of this particular craft comes as no surprise when you learn that in the Bhaktapur district alone there are more than 500 active wood crafters. Today, get to know Bhaktapur's best-cultivated art at the side of a master woodcrafter! At the start of the workshop you will be given an introduction to woodcarving and learn the different techniques and instruments used. Following your introduction, the carving master will demonstrate the use of the different instruments and guide you in their correct use. Once you understand the basics you will start working on your own woodcraft! Depending on whether you choose the single or 2-day workshop you will either carve your own name or create the "om." Unleash your creativity through the art of making a Thanka: a colourful painting integral to the Buddhist culture. A Thanka, meaning “flat painting,” can be found In every Buddhist monastery and home, and they are often used for religious purposes. During this workshop you will have the opportunity to make a small Thanka yourself, which after the workshop you can take home as a unique souvenir. The workshop will take place at a real Thanka Painting School; you will learn the basic techniques and more about the history of these traditional paintings. Once you have a basic understanding you can unleash your creativity and have the freedom to make what you like. During the workshop a delicious, locally-prepared lunch will be served.
