1. From Munich: Small-Group Dachau Memorial Guided Tour
After meeting your guide in Marienplatz, take an S-bahn train to Dachau Bahnhof and then a short bus ride to the memorial site. On the way, learn about the rise of the Nazi Party throughout the 1920s up to Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor in 1933. Hear about the introduction of concentration camps and the role Dachau played as a model for other camps. Start a guided tour of all the areas and buildings open to the public. Visit the SS training facility, the bathhouse, and the main gate with the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ slogan. See the perimeter fence, several religious memorials, and the bunker, which acted as a prison within the camp. Your guide will explain the methods of torture and punishments used in the camp, and the various medical experiments carried out on prisoners. Hear what daily life was like for prisoners and their guards. Learn about Georg Elser, the man who almost killed Hitler and was executed at Dachau. Visit the former gas chamber and crematorium. Watch a short color film of Dachau in the hours following its liberation, and hear about what happened afterwards. You will then walk back to the visitor center and start the return journey back to Munich.
