Shivanasamudra Waterfalls & Ancient Somnathpur Tour

1. Shivanasamudra Waterfalls & Ancient Somnathpur Tour

In the morning around 6:30 am, your chauffeur will pick you up from the hotel and drive to Shivasamudra falls situated on the banks of river Kaveri. It is the second biggest waterfall in India and also the location of one of the first Hydro-electric Power stations in Asia. The island, Shivasamudra, divides the river Kaveri into twin waterfalls named Gaganachukki & Bharachukki Falls. These magnificent waterfalls plunges 320 feet into gorge, breaking into a cloud of misty foam. The waterfalls are surrounded by the lush green hill forests of the Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary. The spectacular waterfalls will certainly take your breath away. The sound of gushing waters has a soothing effect. Enjoy the calm and tranquil ambiance. The place is just picture perfect. Gaganachukki & Bharachukki Falls are at a distance of 13 km from each other. Later, drive to Somnathpur that was set up during the 13th century and was ruled by rich and powerful rulers. The Hoysalas were the last dynasty that ruled this region. They had played a major role in constructing temples in the region and surrounding places. Have a sumptuous lunch at a local restaurant. Later, proceed to visit the Chennakesava Temple, also known as a Keshava Temple. The temple is built on a star-shaped platform and has three carved pinnacles and shrines. The temple is dedicated to Lord Janardhana, Venugopala and Kesava. Somnathpur is also famous for sandalwood oil, incense sticks and other handicrafts. There are many local artisans that are involved in production of teak, ivory, rosewood and sandalwood carvings. Somnathpur is also famous for Mysore style painting of gods and goddesses. After your day tour, drive back to Bangalore. You will be dropped at the hotel.

Very beautiful places, but a little unorganized

This tour is comparatively twice as expensive than if it were booked locally. For this price, I was expecting a full time guide included. Instead I received a driver, he was very nice, but obviously not a tour guide. A very knowledgeble guide was expecting me in Somnathpur and we visited the gorgeous temple there. But there was no guide for the waterfalls, and besides I had to insist to go to Telekadu, even though it was written it is inlided in the tour. Obviously I had no guide for that place. Since those temples are not very tourist friendly I hired a local guide, who was annoying and ignorant. I would not do it again. Better hire a guide directly in Bengalore.

Interesting experience, a bit too expensive though

With a larger group it will be more affordable, but for us two it was a bit expensive. The driver was professional, the car clean, bottled water was present and the AC actually worked. The guide at the temple was very knowledgeable and did a very good job. The description of the tour isn't very clear: we visited one waterfall, but expected two; same with the temple; we received breakfast, which was also not in the description. Both breakfast and lunch were delicious and authentic. I agree with one of the other comments here that the tour ended earlier: we were back at the hotel in Bangalore around 5pm. I guess it's difficult to estimate Indian traffic.

An good day out if you want limited stress and hassle but could be made cheaper booking a car and driver for the day. Be aware that a large part of the day is spent driving. Includes an in-depth temple tour and scenic waterfall but only from a distance, you cannot get close.

Unfortunately the waterfalls were rather poorly filled in January. The waterfalls are worth seeing but in June / July. The country brought me closer to the difference between city life and country life.
