  • Mysterious Sintra: a Unesco Heritage Site

    5. Mysterious Sintra: a Unesco Heritage Site

Villa Palace - This is the best preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal. The thousand-year-old history of the Palace of the Town of Sintra began during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Already mentioned in texts from the 11th century, the original Moorish Palace became the property of the Portuguese Crown after the conquest of the city of Lisbon by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. New extensions were later added to the building over time, although it has largely maintained its present day outline since the mid-16th century. This gradual multiplication of buildings, with different styles, is largely responsible for the enigmatic enchantment of this ancient palace, dominated by great twin chimneys atop the kitchen that constitute as authentic ex-libris of the cultural landscape of Sintra, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The interior...

We were surprised to have basically a private tour tailored to our needs! It was a wonderful experience where we learned a lot about the region, had great conversations, and also time to ourselves to explore. The highlight was the palace at Queluz! We practically had it to ourselves! I’d definitely recommend this tour to anyone and will be in contact to organize my next tour when I’m in Portugal!

Our Guide came to pick us up at the hotel and made a tour starting with Cascais, then we went to Cabo de Roca, Sintra and the Pena Palace. At each stop he explained the most important thing in the place and gave us time to go for free and discover more. The guide named Miguel spoke Spanish, English and other languages perfectly. He was very pleasant and attentive at all times.

Very much enjoyed our day with Miguel. He was very personable and informative. He allowed us to spend time in places that were of interest to us without rushing us or imposing his desires on us. It made this tour so much more enjoyable than with a whole crowd of tourists who all had to do the same things.
