Enjoy a pick-up from your hotel in Avignon or surrounding area (within 25 kilometers of Avignon) by private vehicle and head to the village of Châteauneuf du Pape, which is by far the most prestigious wine-making village in the Rhône Valley. From the ruins of the medieval castle that crowns the village you can enjoy excellent views of the surrounding mountains, of the Rhône river, and the sea of vines covering the hills.
Leave the village by foot, walking on the farming tracks between the celebrated vines of Grenache and Syrah, leading through rolling terrain, from one estate to another. Along the way learn all about the centuries-old history of wine-making in the region, and stop for a wine-tasting. Also enjoy a picnic in the vines (picnic/lunch not included). After the walk is complete you will return back to your hotel in Avignon. The walk is about 7 kilometers long, with about 2 hours total of walking time, on somewhat rocky tracks.
Pick-up is at 9 AM directly at your hotel by your guide in Avignon. The pick-up time can be adjusted if necessary. You will need walking shoes (hiking boots aren't necessary), sun protection (hat, sun cream: there's no shade), a bottle of water, a small backpack (30 liters is a good size) and a picnic lunch. There are no restaurants/shops along the walking paths, so you will need to prepare a picnic beforehand. You will return to Avignon around 5 PM.
