Full description

Embark on a full-day guided tour of the ancient ruins of Mycenae from Athens, with a minimized environmental footprint. Walk in what was once a thriving center of ancient Greece and visit sites, including Epidaurus and the seaport of Nauplion.

During the late Bronze Age, the city of Mycenae played an important role in ancient Greece. This full-day trip from Athens provides the opportunity for you to explore this treasure of the ancient world. Traveling by air-conditioned bus, you’ll make a brief stop at the Corinth Canal, a 3.9-mile engineering wonder connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean Sea. Mycenae is the historical setting for much of ancient Greek literature, including the works of the poet Homer. Tour the archeological site, home to the Lionesses Gate and the tomb of King Agamemnon. You’ll continue on the drive, making a stop in Nauplia, the first capital of modern Greece and home to the fortress of Palamidi. After a relaxing lunch, the final stop of the tour is the city of Epidaurus, home to the World Heritage-listed ancient theater and believed by ancient Greeks to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asklepios. The theater at Epidaurus is perhaps the best-preserved theater of ancient Greece and is still used today because of its amazing acoustics.

I really enjoyed this trip. Having read about Mycenae and the myths surrounding the place being able to go there was great. I agree with the other reviewers that visiting Mycenae first and Epidurous last might be a better way of structuring the day as it was very hot exploring Mycenae. Epidurous was an afterthought for me when I booked the trip - Mycenae being my desired destination, however the theatre built at Epidurous alone made the trip worth it. Our guide (i unfortunately can’t remember her name as it was an uncommon one) was great even in the heat and she kept up a constant stream of tales and information. The bus driver John (Ioannis) was great and the bus was well air conditioned. We didn’t have wifi on the trip as advertised but this may have been because the guide forgot to tell us about it? Lunch was great, a salad to share, zucchini fritters and a choice of one of three mains. Definitely enough food. We had lunch in Nafplio and had time to explore the shops and harbour

Angela and the driver were fantastic and even though we had a rude and inconsiderate group they remained professional to the end. The excursion is nice, not unforgettable, but it is a great way to spend a day outside of Athens and get to know the Peloponnese.

My wife and I took our 2 college-age kids on the tour. The beginning is a little rough, since you're picked up and then taken to the tour office to switch to the correct bus for your tour. We visited on a 100 degree day in July. The bus was well air conditioned, and since the government shut down archaeological sites at Noon, we were able to see Epidaurus before noon. However, Mycenae was closed. Our tour leader, Angela, took us to a museum in Nafplio and gave a guided tour. She was extremely knowledgeable, and that made up for the loss. But we ended up driving to Mycenae and saw it from outside the gates. Angela gave a great overview and we were able to take some pictures. :-) It was great to learn a lot about Greece and these sites from Angela. :-)
