Fantastic trip. If you have a day to spare while you are in Athens I would recommend this trip. It is a long day, 4 hours on a train each way but worth it. We had 4 full days in Athens so we had seen what we wanted to see in 3 days around Athens. For something completely different take this trip, fabulous and the guide was funny and gave us plenty of info. Be prepared it is a long day, but worth it.

I think Meteora is off the radar for most Americans; I’d never heard of it before seeing it in a guidebook, and the four-hour early morning train trip from Athens might seem daunting, but this area is absolutely worth the trouble to get there. The history, the architecture, the artwork, the geography, all add up to an unparalleled experience. The steps can be difficult but our group in our 70s did fine. We had a beautiful sunny day but a light mist would only add to the mystique. Our guide, Chris, was knowledgeable and personable. It was the best day of our 10 days in Greece.

After a 4 hour train ride going from Athens to Kalambaka, we are picked up by the tour guide. The views and incredible once they take us is near the monasteries. There are 3 monasteries that you go to, and in each you pay 3 euros. The first one is a little bit of a climbing stairs but at the top you have amazing views. Make sure you check your email the day before to get your round trip train tickets because nobody is waiting for you at the Athens train station.
