Santander: Picos, Santo Toribio Monastery and Potes Day Tour

1. Santander: Picos, Santo Toribio Monastery and Potes Day Tour

Depart from Santander and head toward Liébana. You will love this region of Cantabria where the landscape is dominated by mountains, forests, and rivers. On the way, prepare to be impressed when crossing the Hermida Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Spain. The first stop will be to visit the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, a holy place for Christianity that houses the Lignum Crucis, the largest preserved piece of wood from the cross of Jesus. After this very special stop, continue the trip towards Fuente Dé, where there is the cable car station to go up to Picos de Europa. Enjoy at least 1 hour and 30 minutes of free time there to enjoy the place, take the cable car, or embark on a horseback riding experience around the area (optional). If you take the cable car, the trip will only last 4 minutes and will take you to a height of 1,823 m above sea level. The views from there are just breathtaking. Finally, arrive in Potes, the capital of Liébana and considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, with its cobbled streets, bridges, and medieval tower, Torre del Infantado. Take a short walking tour of the town and you enjoy free time for lunch and for shopping in one of its many souvenir shops.

Cangas de Onís: Sella River Canoeing Adventure

2. Cangas de Onís: Sella River Canoeing Adventure

Start your Sella River canoeing adventure on a 500-meter practice stretch before getting to the good stuff in Arriondas, the most heart-pumping fun you’ll find along this river. Continue on for another 8 kilometers to Toraño or the extra 15 kilometers to Llovio, depending on what option you’ve selected and how much of the beautiful landscape you want to experience. During the summer, these sections don’t have as many rapids or canoe traffic. If you’re with family, the first section from Las Rozas to Arriondas, which lasts about 1 to 2 hours, might be the perfect stretch for you during the summer months. During the spring, this stretch is more for those seeking adventure.

From Oviedo: Half-Day Camino de Santiago Hike

3. From Oviedo: Half-Day Camino de Santiago Hike

Experience part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route on this half-day tour. Start your tour at the Cathedral of Oviedo, a very important visiting point for pilgrims where you will learn more about the roots of the Camino de Santiago and Primitivo and the role that the Asturian kings and Oviedo played. The first part of the route leads through Oviedo city center and its outskirts. Here, learn more about Asturian culture and gastronomy before entering the beautiful Asturian countryside. You can stamp your pilgrim passport (which you'll receive at the start of the tour) in chapels and bars along the way. Follow the road through small villages along the original, hilly route that hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have taken in previous centuries. Stop along the way to sample some delicious typical Asturian snacks. The tour guide will lead you and tell you about the Camino and Asturias, but there is ample opportunity to enjoy the landscape in silence and meet fellow pilgrims in order to get a real taste of the Camino.

What people are saying about Asturias

This is a great day trip, helped by the fantastic weather (a bit too hot for me, but better than rain and low cloud in the mountains). Jairo was friendly and informative, particularly on nature and ecology. We had an all English-speaking group and there were 6 of us plus Jairo in a 7 seater vehicle. The cable car ride is an extra cost but absolutely worth it and the highlight of the day. Good value for money.

Yes it's wonderful. May be the trip duration could be more and giving more time on the top of Fuente de. But The view and experience at the top is beyond explanation. Gabriella is very knowledgeable and explained in details.

Very well organised. Loved the cable car and drive through Gorge. About the right amount of time in each place. Guide great driver-very friendly and knowledgeable.

It was awesome! Rafael is a great guide, very insightful, funny and an absolute connoisseur of the region's traditions and history. We recommend!

Very nice trip to the mountains "Picos de Europa" with cable car ride and sightseeing of Potes.
