Full description
Your guided tour of Minervino will start from the precious Piazza Aldo Moro square. Whilst at the square you will meet your friendly and informative guide and sightsee amongst some of the Square's monuments, such as the Lombard-Norman Baronial Palace with a neoclassical facade, the Castle, now the town hall, constructed originally in the 11th-century. Start your tour with a walk towards the Lighthouse, a monument built in 1932 that is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the war. From this lookout position, you can admire the panorama of the volcano from Vulture (Basilicata) and the Gargano mountain (Puglia). Leaving the lighthouse behind you, you will enter the historic center of Minervino called "Scesciola", named so because of it's famously narrow streets. Take the opportunity to visit the Cathedral, the ancient Duomo of the village and the bishop's seat for six centuries, built under the Norman domination. You'll also see landmarks such as the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, the Church of Purgatory, commissioned in the fifteenth century by the Prince of Minervino and the Church of San Michele. The tour will end just outside the village with a visit to the Cave of St. Michael Archangel, a beautiful site, dated back to 1000 AD thanks to a parchment found in the Abbey of Montecassino. At this location you will get to try the famous giant Panzerotto, making sure you don't head home with an empty stomach.
