During our days in Madeira, we took the opportunity to book a guided trip to an area classified as a UNESCO monument: the El Torcal de Antequera Nature Reserve with its unusual rock formations and the Stone Age tombs on the outskirts of the community of Antequera. Our guide and driver José Miguel picked up our small group outside the train station and piled us into a minibus for the hour-long transport 50km up the mountains while he told us about the area. We started at an altitude of 1,300 meters where José Miguel first showed a viewpoint with a beautiful view towards the south and the sea, however it was a little too hazy for us to see Malaga. He then joined us on a very rocky hike through the mighty landscape, created by wind and water over millions of years. After a quick coffee in the visitor center's restaurant, we continued down to the Stone Age tombs. There we first visited the museum and then hiked up to both Viera Dolmen and Menga Dolmen (the largest tomb in Europe). Recommended.
