Catalonia Medieval Villages Day Tour from Barcelona

1. Catalonia Medieval Villages Day Tour from Barcelona

Meet your guide in central Barcelona at 08:30 am before setting off for a drive through the heart of the Catalan countryside to the ancient town of Besalú. When you arrive, you’ll take a guided walk through this beautifully preserved village from the Middle Ages. Admire the town's arcaded streets, visit a restored mikveh (an old Jewish bath from the 12th century), and see the remains of a medieval synagogue. On this 10-hour tour you’ll continue by minivan to the village of Rupit. En route, you’ll pass Castellfollit de la Roca, one of the smallest towns in Catalonia with just 1,000 inhabitants living in just 3,280 square feet of space, located on the edge of a basalt precipice. When you arrive in Rupit, enjoy 2 hours of free time to explore this beautiful village at your leisure. Wander along the cobblestone streets lined with 16th-century country houses, stop by the hanging wooden bridge, and visit the Baroque-era Church of Sant Miquel. Have lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense) and see the remains of the Castle of Rupit perched on a rocky peak. Next, enjoy a scenic drive to the top of the Cingles de Tavertet sandstone cliffs. You’ll pass a megalithic tomb (a field of funerary urns) and then the Iberian Wall before reaching the village of Tavertet. With your guide, tour this charming village, declared a National Property of Cultural Interest due to its 48 preserved houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Learn about the village as you admire the houses and the 11th-century Romanesque Church of Sant Cristòfol. Enjoy a short break for coffee at a local café (at your own expense) or walk to the viewpoint to admire stunning views over the Panta de Sau Lake. Then, relax on the drive back to Barcelona and take in views of El Magatalls, a beautiful lush forest, and El Montseny, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere-listed natural park.

Barcelona: Jewish Quarter 2-Hour Walking Tour

2. Barcelona: Jewish Quarter 2-Hour Walking Tour

Learn the story of the Jewish community in Barcelona on a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter. Listen as a personal guide brings the history to life, and explains how important the Jewish people were to the development of Barcelona through the centuries. Go to Spain's oldest synagogue, and stroll down narrow alleys that date back to the Middle Ages. It is estimated that the Jewish community began to arrive in Spain in the 3rd century, following the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. Your guide will describe how the Jewish population grew steadily in Barcelona, becoming more and more important politically and spiritually. Learn how the Jewish community lived in relative peace until 1391, when a brutal attack brought a dramatic end to their presence in Spain. Soak up the art and architecture of the ruins of a house owned by a Jewish alchemist, and see the unique Mikve from medieval times. Go to the ruins of the Old Synagogue (Shlomo Ben Adret), and explore the small Jewish Quarter around the Roman walls.

Deana was so wonderful!!! An absolute encyclopedia on history not only of Barcelona but also Israel and Judaism. She took us back in time with Jewish and regional history then expertly wound us back to the present. Deana wove in details along the way and pointed out interesting facts and artifacts that we never would have been exposed to on a regular tour or Audioguide. Deana's expertise was apparent in every way and she was so lovely which made this an incredibly informative and enjoyable two hours. We would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to weave Jewish history into their time in Barcelona. It is a must-do!!

My husband and I enjoyed this tour. The 3 medieval villages were lovely. It's nice to get away from the city and see these 3 small villages all with a different character. Sergi our tour guide/ driver was amazing. He was funny and very informative about all three villages. Keep up the good work :-) . Highly recommended.
