5 reasons to visit the Amsterdam Museum

Formerly known as the Amsterdam History Museum, this cultural treasure trove is a must-do for anyone eager to learn about the city's rich history. Here are five reasons you can't miss it!

The historic location

Not only is it easily reached in central Amsterdam, the museum is housed in an old orphanage, developed over time by the city's leading architects!

The local art

The collection of Dutch paintings is one of Amsterdam's more modest, but lesser known works from famous names like Rembrandt provide a charming alternative to the larger galleries.

See important historic artifacts

Among the curios illustrating the city's past is the barrel organ damaged when hidden Nazi soldiers emerged to kill 22 in an ambush on liberation celebrations in 1945.

Insights beyond history

The former Amsterdam History Museum outgrew its old name as it began to shed more light into the city's modern culture, from cycling and prostitution to Ajax soccer fandom!

An easy museum to tour

Despite being spread chronologically across three floors, a lot of knowledge can be gleaned in a short space of time due to its efficient layouts and interactive exhibits.

Rolf is highly knowledgeable and personable. Fantastic!

Rolf is well studied in Van Gogh’s life, works and techniques. He speaks perfect English (having lived in NYC), and was able to quickly gauge our group’s intersest and tailor our visit accordingly. This is a very busy museum, particularly in the Summer, and having a guide like Rolf to manage your time, focusing on the interesting and important pieces was invaluable. Highly recommend!
