Toddle through the hidden alleys of the town center to arrive at the Wine Museum, dating back to the 1500s, this site holds treasures of the Altamura wine tradition. Sitting just behind Altamura’s Cathedral, the museum is one of the oldest buildings in the historic city center. The ground floor of the museum holds some special collection pieces, like the impressive 17th century wood press and a series of utensils and equipment of the same age. The second level, climbs 8 meters up a stairwell that leads you to the living-stone cave. The space is naturally temperature and humidity controlled, ensuring the ideal place for wine fermentation and preservation and was found filled with two wooden barrels with capacity of 30,000 and 40,000 liters. Along the walls of the Wine Museum you can view the microscopic streams of minerals and oxides that a centenary of wine production has left on the building. Learn of the hundred years of dedication and sacrifice the wine producers would have contributed during your visit. Finish your experience with a wine tasting that consists of a glass of Primitivo of Altamura  (bottle aged in the natural stone cave) and a selection of cheeses, focaccia and dairy products.
