PROGRAMME Bus transfer from your accommodation* to the port of Capo d'Orlando. Departure at 09:15. Arrival on Lipari at 10:15. Lipari is the largest of the Seven Sisters, with the seven islands together consisting of a total population of ca. 13,000 inhabitants. The only way to arrive on the island is by boat, which provides a good first glimpse of the islands breath-taking scenery, where the stunning blue of the Mediterranean Sea contrasts beautifully against the glaring white mountains of pumice stone. Before you disembark, the captain will confirm you have +/- 2hrs to yourself. This gives you the opportunity to shop in the delightful alleys at Corso Vittorio Emanuele, or to wonder the picturesque historic centre of the island where the Acropolis is situated, and where you will also find the Castle and St. Bartholomew's Cathedral. You can learn about the origins of Lipari at the Archaeological Park and the Regional Aeolian Archaeological Museum Luigi Bernabo Brea, or take the time to discover the gorgeous landscapes of the island of Lipari by bus - we highly recommended the bus tour as it takes just 1.5 hours and departs and returns from Marina Lunga Port. Departure from Lipari at 13:15. Arrival on Vulcano at 13:30. Vulcano is famous for its natural sulphurous mud baths, caused by volcanic phenomena called fumaroles - they provide visitors an opportunity for natural, therapeutic R&R at the end of this busy day trip. A short walk away, and located in the sea a few metres off the white sandy beach, are the islands thermal hot springs, and are a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the sea bubbling before you. Further down the road lies the black beach, covered in obsidian sand - it’s easy to convince yourself to lie back and relax for an hour or so. If you are more active, you can also use your time to discover captivating landscapes while climbing the Gran Cratere (central crater) or visiting La Valle dei Mostri (the Valley of the Monsters) at the Grotta del Cavallo. Departure at 16:30. Arrival at Cefalù at 19:00. Transfer back to your pick-up point. *The pick-up point depends on where you are staying, and may be outside your hotel, or just a short walk away. It is part of the integral nature reserve Isola Lachea e faraglioni dei Ciclopi, the protected area established by the Sicilian Region in 1998. The island, like the others in the archipelago, is of subvolcanic origin, formed by the intrusion of magma into the pre-existing rocks of the seabed. The nature museum houses a rich collection of fauna and flora. 2. The Faraglioni Their origin is thought to be associated with the wrath of the Cyclops Polyphemus who, blinded by Ulysses, allegedly hurled the rocks into the sea at the Greek hero to prevent him from escaping. A story that has certainly fuelled legend about the Cyclops Islands, also recounted in the ninth book of the Odyssey. Fancy aside, these are marvellous works of nature, sculpted over thousands of years by wind and rain, which are part of a protected marine area consisting of the Lachea Island, the Faraglioni and four other rocks arranged in an arch. 3. Norman Aci Castle The Aci Castle is located in Aci Castello in the province of Catania. The fortification, of uncertain origin, was the fulcrum of the development of the Aci territory in the Middle Ages. During the Sicilian Vespers, it was subjected to the rule of Ruggero di Lauria, then in the Aragonese period it belonged to Giovanni di Sicilia and finally to the Alagona family, being besieged several times. It is currently home to a civic museum. 4.Prince Aci Catello's House It was in February 1749 when Prince Don Luigi Riggio, Don Stefano's successor, had a majestic palace erected in Acitrezza for his residence. The palace was built facing the sea, close to the beach, imposing, grandiose, with eleven windows in a row on the façade and on the sea side, equipped with a rampart rampart against the cannons of the Turkish ships that often infested the seas of eastern Sicily. 5. Ulysses Caves Catania in the protected area A bathe in the history of legendary events that supposedly took place between the 13th and 12th centuries BC 6.Rodolico Shipyard at Aci Trezza Shipwrights have been shaping wood for millennia, creating constructions that still ply our waters today.
