Old Town E-Bike Tour by Sitgo

8. Old Town E-Bike Tour by Sitgo

Ride on brand-new e-bikes, a tailor-made mode of transportation for the hilly city of Lisbon. Enjoy riding a bicycle with an electric engine to give you a push on the hardest parts of the route. The guides will show you how to ride the e-bikes and get you ready to go. Start from the Cais do Sodré area and cross the majestic Praça do Comercio, as you cycle on to visit the Old Town district of Alfama. Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter. Spread over the south-eastern slope of the hill crowned by Castelo de São Jorge, this picturesque neighborhood is composed of a maze of narrow streets, winding alleyways, and steep flights of steps. Its Kasbah-like layout is deliberate - this is the city's ancient Arab district. Alfama derives from the Arabic word Al-Hama that means "source of good water". One of the few areas of Lisbon, which wasn't destroyed by the big 1775 earthquake, Lisbon's old quarter offers many things to see. The tightly-packed lanes, small archways, and stone-paved terraces are full of atmosphere and great fun to explore. Besides the castle, there are several historic 17th-century churches in the vicinity, as well as the city's impressive cathedral. Alfama also wakes up at night, when some of the city's most authentic cafés and restaurants open their doors to serve delicious traditional cuisine. The neighborhood is also home to traditional Fado houses, where this unique Portuguese musical expression can be appreciated in rustic and romantic surroundings.

We booked this E-bike tour as this was the first time in Lisbon. Our only request to George was to show us some none-tourist sights. And he really delivered. We saw several of the famous view points - but also some of the unknown. We saw several street arts and learned the history behind them. The 3 hours flew by (it was an e-bike!). George has a huge knowledge of Lisbon and Portugal that he gladly shared. I throughly recommend this tour.
