From Sofia: Skopje, Northern Macedonia Day Tour

1. From Sofia: Skopje, Northern Macedonia Day Tour

The history of Skopje began with the settlements of the Thracians and establishing the fortress of Scupi. Since then, the town has changed its sovereign numerous times, being part of the Roman, Byzanatine, Bulgarian and the Serbian countries for short time.  The Ottomans conquered the city in 1392 and changed the name to Uskub, which became home for numerous Ottomans, Bulgarians and Albanians.  In 1912, the city was liberated from the Ottomans during the First Balkan war, and eventually became a part of the Serbian country. During the two world wars, it was eventually given to Bulgaria, before becoming capital of the Macedonian Federation in the Yugoslavian socialistic republic. The city then started growing rapidly industrially and economically.  Unfortunately a huge earthquake in 1963 destroyed a huge part of the town, leaving more than 100,000 people without homes. Skopje managed to recover quickly from it, just in time to become a capital of the independent country of Macedonia. Your Day in Skopje (North Macedonia) The departure is early, somewhere around 8.00 AM depending on your hotel pick-up time, because the driving time is 4 hours each way, and the border cross may take a while. You will then head towards the Old Fortress, for some remarkable pictures of the city from the top. Then you will end with a visit to the old quarter and its famous church - St Saviour. After a little free time to buy some souvenirs, you'll head towards the car, without forgetting to pass by the huge buildings of Skopje 2014's project.  Around 3:30- 4:00 PM, you will depart from Skopje and arrive back in Sofia at around 7:30-8:00 PM.

On our trip to Macedonia we went to Kartal winery. The wine tour started with a lesson how different types of wines are made and afterwards we had the wine tasting of a great selection of white, rose and red wines. Each wine was accompanied by a story about the origin, history and the occasional anecdote of the wine. Besides the wine we were offered tasteful appetizers that went well with the wines. The guide and his brother were very friendly people and the guide made us feel at home in the cozy room where we were sitting. He really gave us a taste of Macedonian hospitality (and of the great wines of course ;)). The tour was delightful and not expensive. At the end we bought two bottles of wine to take with us and the guide gifted us a third bottle, which we are very grateful for. Thank you for the lovely and personal wine tasting experience and we hope to see you next time when we are in Skopje!

Jordan is a very friendly and passionate winemaker, always ready to share a lot of meaningful information about the family wine production and the history of North Macedonia. And the wines... Omg, all the six wines we tasted were absolutely great, but the Chardonnay and the Merlot barrique in particular were just incredible. The food pairing with local delicacies was spot on. Would definitely recommend this experience to anyone visiting Skopje.

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! We were treated to a very nice lunch with wine pairings overlooking Chateau Sopot's mountain winery. It gets very busy there on the weekends, so it was nice to have a reserved table and a pre-set, traditional Macedonian menu. Our driver, Robert, was absolutely excellent! Very friendly and shared his knowledge about the region and Macedonia in general. Would definitely recommend!

I really impressed by this Tour: beautiful places, friendly local people and rich history + warm, professional guide and driver
